Ever since the talented (or simply magical?) Johnny Wu Magic performed at our company party a few months ago, I have found myself drawn to the world of magic, magicians, and mystery. And luckily, LA offers plenty of opportunities in this regard. Whereas I'm still after an elusive invite to Magic Castle, I settled with a more attainable show to attend nestled nearby along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Black Rabbit Rose magic show.
I was debating even writing about my evening at Black Rabbit as I don't want to spoil any of the fun surprises... they also advise that no flash photography or video should be taken during the show, but photos without flash are okay. However, the experience overall was so incredible I couldn't leave it off Hannah's List! The place acts like a bit like a speakeasy - no flashy signs outside, just a bouncer standing outside of an archway with the Black Rabbit Rose insignia above that you can recognize from their website. You first enter the bar area, which also has some tables that offer full-service dining. Anyone can come by and just have some drinks at the bar without seeing any of the shows, if you so chose. If you snake around the hallway to the left of the bar, you enter the lobby area outside of the theater. People begin to gather here around 20-30 minutes prior to showtime as ushers will begin to let groups in one at a time to the theater. I highly recommend going an hour early to order a few cocktails at the bar prior to showtime. They serve the tables in the theater from a select cocktail menu during the 15-20 minutes prior to showtime, but by ordering drinks from the proper bar area you are privvy to the full cocktail selection. I opted for The Dark Arts, a black, fruity cocktail made dark with the addition of charcoal, followed by the milky-toned Honey Bunny, which delightfully bubbles like a cauldron when served.
The Magic Show itself lasts about an hour, and weaves magic into the historical significance of the building itself, as it housed many famous actors during Hollywood's glory days. You can also enjoy the addition of a talented singer (the lovely Liberty Larsen) as well as a fire breather & sword swallower (the fierce Asia May). The main magician was quirky and left me feeling like he had hopped straight out of Netflix's Maniac, but he was very entertaining. For a cool $40 a ticket, this show was definitely worth it. And if jazz and burlesque is more your thing over magic, Black Rabbit also offers an array of other shows throughout the week. Check out their website for more info on all the different shows to pick what sounds most intriguing and appropriate for you. And as always, please feel free with any inquiries or further information about my experience here. Have a wonderful week!
