Whimsy in LA: The Cabana Cafe

Updated: Jul 22, 2022

Located on the grounds of the fabulous Beverly Hills Hotel, you can take a seat poolside at The Cabana Cafe, a gorgeous, overpriced haven with cute cocktails and equally cute waiters flitting about in tennis attire. As my sister had recently graduated and I had just scored a promotion, I decided it would be a good place to celebrate and get a visit to the famous hotel ticked off of the bucketlist. Upon driving up to the lobby, the hotel offers valet (although at a steep price - with restaurant validation valet is still $15!). A large red carpet connects the driveway to the entryway... my sister had arrived early and was seated on an armchair by the entrance listening to the bellboys gossiping over Enrique Iglesias's visit the prior day.

As you walk through the hotel lobby to the right, you will find a spiral staircase leading down to a lower floor, marked by palm frond wallpaper. In the following hallway, we passed a coffee shop, gift store, luxury clothing boutiques, and the spa. Once you hit the front desk of the spa, turn right and you can go outside into the pool area. A corridor of lush banana trees, roses, and star jasmine lead your walk down to the pool. Please note that there are a lot of stairs involved, so wear shoes made for walking!

We were actually nervous that the cafe was not going to be open on Saturday, because I had received a warning call the prior day about potential closure due to rain. It had literally just sprinkled on Friday, and there was a barely a drop of rain the forecast, but luckily the cafe was indeed open. Even though the tables are covered by a terrace, there are spaces in between the coverings where rain can come through. I'd imagine the reasoning for a closure in rain is to avoid soaked patrons.

We received wonderful service from our waittress, Gloria. You can ask for substitutions, etc and they will do their best to accomodate you here. Of course, I'd hope to receive good service if I'm paying upwards of $40 for a salad! For drinks, I went with the rose sangria and my sister ordered the mango mule. They were both yummy, but the rose sangria was a little sour for my taste (I much prefer The Ivy version!) so perhaps the frose would be a better choice. For entrees, we went with the McCarthy and Asian Chicken Salads. I asked for no beets and the dressing on the side for my McCarthy which seemed to be any easy fix for them. Both of the salads were scrumptious! I loved how finely chopped all of the ingredients were in the McCarthy. My sister loved the flavor, but found the chicken in her salad to be a bit chewy. See photos of all the deliciousness below.

After the main course, my sister asked for the "Sweet Treats" menu, which prompted me to laugh because I asked how she knew they called it that and she said she had looked it up. Becky ordered a chocolate milkshake and I opted for a double-shot of espresso with almond milk. My sister seemed to LOVE her shake (I tried a tiny sip) so we would definitely recommend.

Overall, The Beverly Hills Hotel experience was a lot of fun, but this definitely won't be something my bank account wants to do again anytime soon! Menu prices are online so you can easily pre-plan what you want to order. You may also be able to save money by Ubering in as well. If you find this post tempts you to try out The Cabana Cafe in the near future, remember to make a reservation in advance. And of course, if you have any questions, please feel free to comment below.
